SUPERCORE- Conditioning from the Centre Out

SUPERCORE- Conditioning from the Centre Out
SuperCore work takes on more than the Core work that is a part of many gym and bodywork systems. Here, it is an area of conditioning that connects the Hips-Core-Shoulders to influence how the body moves. This entire section has been separated from The Polymetric Advantage and Poly2Plyos Specialties because it deserves attention as a major influence on performance and injury protection.

A differentiating factor is the acknowledgement that the Core muscle-tendon-fascia units never work alone—there are groups and layers involved that connect to the hips and shoulders and protect the spine and body organs. During movement the Core region is usually the first to respond due to a protective mechanism that senses centre-of-mass shifts. Another factor is that the Core never sleeps—there is always a bit of stability work going on. If you try to maintain an exaggerated tension it will fail as people who try to suck in their abs find. And the third factor is that the hips and shoulders have connections to the Core region. Work done by the Shoulders and/or Hips will also involve the Core.

The link to SuperCore programming is through the acknowledgement that integrating Core work with Hip and Shoulder work is more effective than trying to isolate work on specific Core regions. Leave that to research. If you are looking to move around, the Core needs to be integrated with the movement and the space that that move occupies.

The reason we often need SuperCore work is because disuse and misuse patterns often leave the Core region in a state of insufficiency. The muscles, tendons, ligaments can be overwhelmed by dynamic moves and landings, causing the spinal region to take on the force patterns with erosion and injury being the result. Regular inclusion of SuperCore work strives to counter the imbalances and develop a capacity for movement that goes beyond skill demands.

The programmes are arranged as six-exercise tiers that can be performed as a stand-alone, or integrated into other work. So don’t wait for pain to be the motivation for change...develop your SuperCore with daily intervention and attention. Your body will thank you...

DYNAMIC POSTURE: Core Against the Wall 1 (099)

Using a wall as an anchoring surface allows for more variety of strong anchoring exercises. The tensions possible offer many times the intensity of open chain variations and moves. With Dynamic Posture: Core Against the Wall (099) (also in the SuperCore folder) both feet and hands are used as anchors, along with MedBall grasping that adds even more muscle-tension involvement. This programme arranged as a stand-alone conditioning tier that also inserts easily into leg and arm work. The Objective? Simple…we all need to work on the Core region capacity and consistency so that performance cannot erode with fatigue and contribute to injury in the lower spine and other joint areas like the knees. While we cannot do all things at once, we can do some things at once, and this is a great place to start!

SIT BACK to SIT UP 1 (098)

Most of know or have grown up with flexion work or assessments like ‘Crunchies’. With Sit Backs the torso tilts back from a vertical posture towards a balance point. More muscles and connective support layers get involved when you need to control posture through a range of motion. The exercises in Sit Back to Sit Up 1 use a seated posture and are controlled from the hips. There is a variety to explore, and the benefits relate to performance capabilities and consistency. This is all part of moving well and feeling even better!

LOW BACK BLUES 3 (097)

For those on progressive or high intensity programmes a bit of back stiffness or ache can be a common outcome. It takes time for different regions to adapt. In addition, the Core region is constantly adjusting to the humanness of off-centre and imbalanced postures. The Low Back Blues 3 programme is a series of hip-Core specialties designed to supplement overloads from other dynamic work so that the Core region remains supple and responsive. Regular usage offers a safety net for the occasional misstep or faulty landing that can lead to chronic pain or injury. The series is a stand-alone tier that fits well into other dynamic work as an active rest tier. Most people wait until the lower back or hips feel pain before responding… with the Low Back Blues you can ensure that you never get to that point.

CROUCHED CORE BLAST 1 (086)

Working the Core region never needs to try and isolate muscles for development when so many integrative options are available. With Crouched Core Blast both the shoulders and hips get involved at high tensions and challenge the Core to adapt and develop. The benefits to using ‘The Blast’ on a regular basis relate to competency and protection for movement related to the whole body. This is preparation for training and competition skills at its best; the result is a Core that exceeds skill demands and allows the limbs to continue developing without setbacks.

CORE AGAINST THE WALL 2 (091)

Using a wall as an additional support adds potential for anchoring and intensity. With Core Against the Wall 2 complexity and intensity are the main challenges. The series uses seated and lying postures so that the hips and Core need to do more work to move and stabilise. While the rep counts for each exercise are not high, together they tier design adds up to create a good volume of Core attention. The series adapts well from a stand-alone design to work as an insert into other work. As with other Core focused designs the intent is to give you a great background in Core capabilities that will integrate with the demands of skill training.

MEDBALL WIZARD 2 (070)

Traditional medicine ball use was actually more about bodywork than throwing…The MedBall Wizard series uses that knowledge and a vast library of 500+ exercises to bring you valuable Core, hip, and shoulder variations. These include throws as apex skills in the hierarchy of preparation for training and return-to form after layoffs. The MedBall Wizard 2 series uses seated postures to challenge Core stability while moving the shoulders. The exercises are found within the SuperCore folder of Poly2Plyos work being offered through Two Seahorses. This programme adapts well from a stand-alone supplement that can be done every day to being part of multiple tiers dedicated to dynamic posture…

Dynamic Posture: Polymetric Stances 1 (049)

The centre of action for human movement is in the hips, with legs below and body above. The hips are designed with specialised musculature that allows a bilateral stride at a variety of speeds and with an ability to manoeuvre. The spine and body above the hips have a role in keeping a stable posture that does not strain musculature or put internal organs at risk. If this mobility-stability dynamic breaks down or is insufficient we end up with injury and chronic pain. There is much that can be done to prevent deterioration of body posture and retain mobility over many decades. The programme Polymetric Stances 1 has been designed as a set of six exercises that focus on the legs, hips, and Core. The exercises use the unique systems of Polymetric™ anchoring to increase the intensity of exercise reps with low-risk positions and moves. These exercises need never leave the programme as they naturally change with age and stage using the same perceived Polymetric tensions.

Core Throwing 2

It is difficult to measure how much the Core region contributes to various skills. One thing that coaches and athletes can agree on is that Core deficiencies detract from performance and lead to injuries. A pathway for preventing Core imbalances is to condition the area as a preparation to training and competitive readiness. At the top of the heap for conditioning impact are MedBall throws. The programme Core Throws 2 (045) from Poly2Plyos – SuperCore is a low centre-of-gravity tier of dynamic exercises that challenge a range of Core muscle-tendon groups from the hips upwards to the shoulder-arms. The exercises are from the vast library of the MedBall Wizard. The objective is to condition the Core for higher force-velocity skills used in training so that fatigue interference or compensatory movements do not interfere with training quality. If you need a break from routine throws against a wall and want to challenge your Core with some higher-level work, then Core Throws 2 (045) is a great place to start.
