The POLYMETRIC ADVANTAGE- Anchor and Brace

The POLYMETRIC ADVANTAGE- Anchor and Brace
POLYMETRICS is a new, or new-from-old system of postural mobility-stability work. It is based in part on an evolutionary part of human anatomy: the hands and feet were grasping and holding appendages. While the hands retain much of that function, the feet have lost some in the shift to being a bipedal mover. The functions and their connections still exist. If used as intended, the feet ‘grasp’ the ground by forming an anchor effect. This is a stable base of support from which motion from the legs, hips and Core respond by bracing. If the hips and core sense that the base is unstable then power output will be limited. Watch someone try to walk on ice… Similarly, the hands often use anchoring as both open and closed chains. Anchoring against a wall or grasping a ball. If the stability factor is insecure the Core will limit power output.

Polymetrics takes this bit of background and uses it to create an exercise system that is used to prepare the body for movement. The idea is to develop the movement chains and stability networks in parallel. The movement chains often contain some of the largest muscle-tendon groups in the body. The stability networks are typically made up of smaller muscle-tendon groups that work together to create consistency and precision. Many traditional exercise formats emphasise the larger muscles, and may assume that other groups will develop in parallel. There is no guarantee. If the stability groups are overwhelmed by the forces and velocities generated by larger muscles, then some form of compensation occurs in order to complete the task. Over time injury is a common result. Remember that most injury patterns are not accidental or catastrophic—they are the result of fatigue overloads and the chronic use of faulty movement patterns.

The Polymetric Advantage is made up of programmes that are useful as inserts within other work or as active rest. They can also be performed as stand-alone tiers of six in order to inject more performance capacity and competency. And, let me tell you, they are not easy work. The high tensions used are the ones used in the past by Strong Men and Women who were performers that could bend steel and create human pyramids. The principles are also a part of modern gymnastics and dance. This is bodywork that takes you forwards with control, capability, and confidence. As a base for higher overload-velocity work they are unsurpassed! As a background for moving with grace at any age they are unmatched!

And, The Polymetric Advantage is exclusively offered through The2Seahorses.

DOUBLE DOUBLE BRACING (092)

Polymetric tensions can be generated between hand and foot as well as between the feet or hands. In Double Double Bracing a wall is added for anchoring so that the Core receives tensions from the shoulders and hips. The hands and feet are the anchors that are working to maintain stability as the body is moved around. The programme is adaptable and integrates well into other work as an insert within dynamic work. In the end, the stability networks and mobility chains develop the capacity to work with more dynamic work at a high level so that fatigue or old patterns don’t creep in…so go and get bracing!

BRACED STABILITY STRENGTH (082)

We humans will always encounter unstable and unbalanced landings and foot placements. Many of these lead to debilitating injury that alters movement patterns and damages joints. When you use Braced Stability Strength you are doing two major things… enhancing foot placement consistency and increasing stabilising network capabilities so that trips or stumbles are not as damaging. By using a wall or corner for anchoring the intensity of the polymetric tensions can be ramped up to high levels to provide an exceptional challenge to the ankles, knees, and hips. If you are involved in multi-directional activity or have an injury history from unstable landings take a good look at this higher complexity offering.

SUPER ANKLES 1 (074)

Being able to manage overloads and actions of the body while standing on one leg is a part of lifestyle generally as well as sport and dance. The lower legs and feet must be able to absorb the forces and adjustments of every small movement without losing strength capabilities or freezing into rigidity (as with uncertain landings). Super Ankles 1 is a programme that identifies imbalances and insufficiencies and remedies them, in addition to working on consistency and precision. Programmes this series are a must-have for anyone engaged in multi-directional or start-stop activities. This is one of those ‘don’t wait for pain – prevent it!’ programmes that is suitable for many ages and stages.

Knee Stability: Foot to Hip via Knees (095)

The knee joint only has one dedicated muscle with the remainder of muscular support coming from muscles above and below that attach across the joint with tendons. Since the knees are an  area receiving a great number of both wear-and-tear and accidental injuries it is always worth giving the region some attention. The Foot to Hip via Knees programme is a valuable addition to any active programme and to personal fitness because of the integrated approach that looks at the hips and lower legs as the sources of both strength and power. The selections use a variety of directional polymetric tensions and body alignments to create a focus on mobility and stability networks that involve a large percentage of available supports to the knee.

SUPER ANKLES 2 (075)

This second set of 6 exercises from the Super Ankle series looks to extend the stability challenges found in the first series (Super Ankles 1 within The Polymetric Advantage) with added mobility work. Being able to manage a movement through a range of motion without wobbles or unbalanced adjustments is difficult work for the lower legs and feet. The ankle joint never gets a rest as it needs to adjust to shifts in the upper body and hips. The developmental results initiated here feed forwards into more dynamic force-velocity moves such as landings and takeoffs, contributing to progression and enhanced recovery skills. If you are involved in a sport or dance where ankle and foot issues are common, have a history of lower leg issues, or wish to enhance activities like sprints or change of direction skills, then this programme is a must-have for your portfolio.

GOING VERTICAL 1 (076)

When you look beyond airtime or height reached with vertical skills and all the factors that contribute to effective vertical work you begin to appreciate the work it takes to achieve competency. The Going Vertical 1 (075) selection of 6 exercises from The Polymetric Advantage group emphasises factors like consistency and control that feed strength development in vertical skills. The programme works by reducing the imbalances that plague takeoff skills, reducing effectiveness and resulting in injuries to the knees and lower legs. The 6 exercises look to challenge the movement chains and stability networks in parallel so that every landing and every takeoff is efficient and precise. The benefits go beyond developing a good vertical takeoff to stride mechanics, change of directions skills, accelerations, and reactive skills.

DYNAMIC POSTURE: Core Against the Wall 1 (099)

Using a wall as an anchoring surface allows for more variety of strong anchoring exercises. The tensions possible offer many times the intensity of open chain variations and moves. With Dynamic Posture: Core Against the Wall (099) (also in the SuperCore folder) both feet and hands are used as anchors, along with MedBall grasping that adds even more muscle-tension involvement. This programme arranged as a stand-alone conditioning tier that also inserts easily into leg and arm work. The Objective? Simple…we all need to work on the Core region capacity and consistency so that performance cannot erode with fatigue and contribute to injury in the lower spine and other joint areas like the knees. While we cannot do all things at once, we can do some things at once, and this is a great place to start!

Dynamic Posture: Polymetric Stances 1 (049)

The centre of action for human movement is in the hips, with legs below and body above. The hips are designed with specialised musculature that allows a bilateral stride at a variety of speeds and with an ability to manoeuvre. The spine and body above the hips have a role in keeping a stable posture that does not strain musculature or put internal organs at risk. If this mobility-stability dynamic breaks down or is insufficient we end up with injury and chronic pain. There is much that can be done to prevent deterioration of body posture and retain mobility over many decades. The programme Polymetric Stances 1 has been designed as a set of six exercises that focus on the legs, hips, and Core. The exercises use the unique systems of Polymetric™ anchoring to increase the intensity of exercise reps with low-risk positions and moves. These exercises need never leave the programme as they naturally change with age and stage using the same perceived Polymetric tensions.
